Everything You Need to Know About Viega MegaPress EPDM.

Since their introduction to the North American market in 2012, Viega’s MegaPress fittings have earned a reputation as the best in the business. Viega’s ProPress and MegaPress brands have even become somewhat of a generic term for press fittings in general.

While that sort of popularity is great, it can also cause some confusion among users. For example, MegaPress is not a single product, but three separate lines with distinct applications. Using the incorrect fitting can shorten the life of the sealing element or may not be approved for the application.

A lot of the questions we get to our Technical Support line (866-838-8714) deal with which type of fitting to use for various applications. While we can answer most questions immediately, a few over the years have made us do our own research. For example, did you know that MegaPress EPDM is approved for DOT 3 Brake Fluid, a high-performance hydraulic brake fluid for use in automotive disc, drum and anti-skid brake systems and clutch systems?

Brake fluid aside, here’s a quick summary of what you need to know about MegaPress EPDM:

Color: The dots on MegaPress EPDM fittings are green. The dot also means that the fittings have Viega’s Smart Connect technology, which makes it easy to identify unpressed fittings during pressure testing.

Sizes: While other MegaPress fittings are available in sizes up to 4", MegaPress EPDM fittings are available only in ½", ¾”, 1", 1 ¼”, 1½” and 2".

Sealing element: EPDM is short for ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber, a synthetic, cured, all-purpose elastomer with excellent resistance to chemicals and other harsh environmental conditions. The sealing element partially determines the approved applications.

Applications: MegaPress EPDM is approved for more than 13 different applications, including non-potable water, hydronic heating, fire sprinklers and residential low-pressure steam. Click here for a complete listing of applications. It’s also approved for outdoor and underground use.

Materials: Made of carbon steel with a zinc-nickel coating, MegaPress EPDM is for use with Schedule 5 to 40 carbon steel pipe, commonly referred to as black iron pipe.

The MegaPress family of products is the subject of a three-part series on TechTalk Live, the monthly Instagram livestream with Viega technical consultants Bo DeAngelo and Troy Locke. The first, which aired last month, dealt with MegaPress EPDM; the October and November sessions will cover MegaPressG and MegaPress FKM.
